Background on the IR reforms
On 26 May 2020 the Prime Minister announced that industrial relations reform was a key step in Australia’s path out of the pandemic. While short-term initiatives such as JobKeeper and other financial support packages were rolled out with immediate effect, the need for lasting changes to industrial reform was recognised.
As part of this planned reformation, the Attorney-General facilitated Working Groups, involving business and employee groups, which were designed to achieve a consensus approach to reform. The Government made it clear, however, that it would press ahead with reforms if consensus was not achieved.
The five Working Groups each dealt with a discrete area of reform. These were:
- Award simplification for “distressed” industries
- Enterprise agreement making
- Casuals and fixed term employees
- Compliance and enforcement.
- Greenfields agreements for new enterprises.
Some of these will have profound impacts on the way Australian businesses will conduct themselves into the future.
